Special events and exhibits are often on display. Upcoming events include blood drives, performances by numerous high school choirs and bands, and meetings of different political groups.

Another interesting aspect of the capitol to be sure to see are the monuments spread out over the 22 acres of ground surrounding the capitol building. There are monuments to the wars fought by our country: World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Monuments specific to the history of Texas include a monument to the heroes of the Alamo, Texas pioneer women, and the Texas Cowboy.

The Visitors Center for the capitol building also offers numerous special exhibits. Past exhibits include capitol treasures, maps, and the treaty of Velasco. Currently the Visitors Center is showcasing the history of the Texas Governor’s mansion. Numerous aspects of the design and creation of the building will be highlighted. Tours of the grounds and capitol are available upon request. A guided tour will highlight a vast array of characteristics of the building themselves, Texas history, and the Texas legislature. Tours usually last approximately 45 minutes and are very informative.

Shopping and dining are also available at the capitol building. The gift shop stocks lots of made in Texas items as well as Texas souvenirs. The Capitol Grill is open to the public and a separate dining area can be reserved for catering. With the inclusion of the shopping and dining options, an entire day could be spent discovering all that the capitol and its surrounding grounds have to offer. Whether you are interested in the history of Texas, the amazing architecture of the capitol, the wonderful monuments spread out along the lawn, or the ever changing events, the State capitol has something for everyone.
