Do You Have a Retinal Detachment?

Are you having sudden trouble with your vision? Are floaters clogging your line of vision? Have you experienced sudden flashes of light or does there seem to be a shadow in your field of vision? If you have answered yes, then there is a chance that you are suffering from retinal detachment. The need for medical attention at the onset of these symptoms is absolute.

Retinal detachment occurs when layers of tissue at the rear of the eye pull apart. The retina, which is the portion of the eye responsible for detecting the light signals to be sent to the brain, loses its connection with the back of the eye. As a result the blood vessels that are responsible for nourishing the retina cannot get oxygen to it. There is a real chance of permanent blindness if the condition is not treated immediately, as a lack of oxygen can leave the fragile tissue to wither away. Because the retinal tissue actually begins to die, there is nothing that doctors will be able to do to correct any vision loss that occurs as a result, including LASIK Austin eye doctors have many new technologies that can help them detect the warning signs of this sort of problem early and help them fix the problem to stop vision loss, but it depends on the individual’s willingness to seek help.

Within the center of the eye is a gel-like substance called the vitreous. When a small tear occurs, this liquid can leak and build up beneath the retina. This thinning and tearing, which results in the leaking, is not unusual as a person ages. Unfortunately, as the liquid leaks, the vitreous area shrinks and pulls further away from the retina resulting in a full detachment. Then, the blood supply is lost. From that point forward, time is the enemy. An appointment should be scheduled right away and all symptoms should be discussed openly with the doctor. Bring a friend or family member along, in case you need a ride home.

In some instances, it is not natural causes that result in this sort of tear. Trauma, an inflammatory disorder, or even uncontrolled diabetes can cause the same situation to arise. In other instances, a leak will not occur at all. Instead, age causes the vitreous to simply shrink and sag, much like skin does.

There are certain factors that can increase your risk of retinal detachment. As mentioned above, age is a big player. Once one reaches the age of forty, the chances of this condition arising increase quite substantially. Once a retinal detachment has occurred once, the chances of it occurring again, in the opposite eye, are much more likely. Similarly, individuals who have a family history of the condition should be seen more regularly by the eye doctor to screen for problems within the eye.

For those who have suffered serious eye injuries or who have undergone certain surgical procedures, such as cataract surgery, retinal detachment becomes a major concern. Regular eye exams can help to ensure any problems are caught early. This routine should also be followed by people who suffer from extreme myopia, also known as myopia.

What to Expect During and After Professional Teeth Whitening

What to Expect During and After Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening is a procedure that many people in this country have considered. After all, it is the smile that enters the room first, that will make the first impression on new acquaintances, and that will entice that first kiss. Dirty, stained, or poorly cared for teeth can cast a bad image on an otherwise great person. Thus, it makes perfect sense that Austin teeth whitening and bleaching have gained such popularity in the past couple of decades.

Your dentist can do many things to help your smile cosmetically, including the use of new translucent Invisalign in Austin, but it is

whitening that will make the most dramatic difference in the shortest amount of time. There are a couple of manners in which this process can be done. Today, many dentists offer home bleaching kits, which can be purchased from the office and handled in the comfort of your own house. This alleviates some of the nervousness that many people feel about dental procedures, but it also helps cut cost, as these kits are often priced well below a professional bleaching. Either way, however, there are a couple of things that should be considered before moving forward with whitening.

With the home kits, there will likely be a mouth tray, which will be filled with a whitening agent and set in place for a specified period of time. Much like the kits that can be purchased from retail chains, these are simple to use and can result in the desired results. However, the ones the dentist supplies are often much more potent and will give the preferred outcome faster. Due to their potency, these kits, much like the in office procedure can result in some teeth sensitivity. This is especially true for first time bleachers. Because it penetrates the enamel layer of the tooth, this is a normal and typically expected result. It should fade within two or three days of the bleaching session.

In office bleaching in Austin, TX, does produce the same sensitivity, and your dentist can provide some insight on how to alleviate the discomfort until it dissipates. Because the solution used in the dental chair is even more potent than the at home kits, it can also cause a burning sensation in the gums or on the lips. This is the reason that a protective gel will be applied prior to the bleaching. After the gel is in place, the whitening chemicals are applied to the teeth. In some situations, the patient must then wait for up to twenty minutes. However, in other cases, a laser will be used to activate the solution. More than one session may be required, and each will likely consist of more than one application, which is the reason that one should set aside approximately one hour when headed to the office for teeth bleaching.

Teeth bleaching should not cause excessive discomfort. The dentist should be alerted if the procedure becomes painful. It should also be noted that whitening agents are not effective on veneers, caps, crowns, or onlays. For people with manufactured pieces in place, it might be necessary to re-fabricate those units to match the new and improved natural teeth.

User-Friendly Specialized Eye Care

Routine eye care is a staple of good health care. A basic eye exam as part of an annual health check-up schedule should be nearly automatic. A simple annual exam will leave the person confident that one of our most precious senses is being safe-guarded for the future. At some point during their lifetimes, people may require some more specialized services from their eye care practitioners.

Whether their needs are as simple as a pair of reading glasses, or something more complex like LASIK surgery, there are many very qualified doctors, surgeons, and optometrists available to help. For example, conducting a Google search for “
eye doctor in Austin TX” will return more than 300,000 listings. Obviously prospective clients will want to narrow that search somehow. They might utilize one of the many sites that search by zip code, they can check with friends and family for recommendations, or they can check one of the eye doctor directories available online.

Most eye care specialists offer a contact lens exam as a regular in-office service—there’s no need to look for another more specialized practitioner. Contact lenses do need specific measurements to ensure proper fit, so the measurements will be taken by the eye doctor or one of his assistants. Contacts have seen huge advances since they were introduced in the early 1960’s. Early lenses were hard, fragile disks that popped in and out (sometimes without provocation), they had to be sterilized nightly, and could irritate the eye surface. They were primarily available only to people with standard vision issues like near or far sightedness. Today, lenses come in many natural-looking colors, they are oxygen and water-based. The new materials are breathable and therefore more comfortable, some can be worn overnight, and some are available in disposable models. Looking forward, scientists are currently working on lenses to correct problems like color-blindness and dyslexia.

For a more permanent fix for vision problems, LASIK surgery has become both more available and more affordable in recent years. In this procedure, the
LASIK surgeon shaves small layers away from the cornea to reshape it. The procedure is done as out-patient day surgery with the patient awake the whole time. Results are dramatic, and often can be recognized in less than 24 hours. While laser surgery may seem like it has reached its peak, research is on-going.

If an eye care specialist suspects that a patient has glaucoma, he/she may refer the client to a glaucoma specialist. These practitioners are subject to additional training and residency to study this very common disease of the eye. Since glaucoma has no noticeable symptoms, and it is the second most frequent cause of blindness in this country, early diagnosis and treatment are essential. While all eye doctors study glaucoma during their medical school training, it can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Specialists offer full-care services to glaucoma patients; from diagnosis to surgery, to post-op care they form a bond and a partnership with their patients to ensure the best possible results.

Understanding Adult Acne and When It’s Time to Get Help

You thought you had beat it at eighteen or nineteen years old when suddenly those little blemishes became far more infrequent and your face carried a new smooth, clear glow, but suddenly as an adult you find yourself standing before the mirror with a flashback to the senior prom night. Pimples, zits, and other blemishes, are not attractive at any age and regardless of a newfound confidence in yourself that might not have exists at the tender age of sixteen, you still want to hide when a breakout happens. You are not alone. Despite a common misconception, acne in the adult years is very common – almost as common as that which comes in the pubescent years. There are ways that you can deal with acne today, however, that will keep it at a minimum and keep you feeling great.

The first and most important thing to understand is that stress does cause acne. This is not a myth. Because the skin is so closely connected to the nervous system, acne has a tendency to come out more when one is stressed, just as embarrassment would cause one to blush. Combined with hormonal imbalances that are likely to occur again as one approaches middle age, the skin can suddenly begin producing oil in extreme excess. That oil, combined with dead skin cells, which occur naturally, can clog pores and presto, you have another breakout.

To flush out the clogged pores and reduce the chances of more to come, a mild, nightly face washing is always recommended. Using warm (not hot) water, a mild soap, and a soft cloth, you should gently wash your face each and every evening. This will help wash away the excess oil and dead, loose skin cells without irritating the skin and making the situation worse. It can also be very beneficial to visit a day spa for a special cleansing on occasion.

If the acne is sudden, then is could be a result of a recent illness or vitamin deficiency. Both of these can cause excess oil production and, as a result, breakouts. Check with your doctor if you think that this might be the case. Vitamin deficiencies are typically very easily fixed and you could quickly see clear skin again. Sudden and severe acne can also be a sign of other trouble, such as adrenal or ovarian diseases in women. If this is the case, it would likely be coupled with menstrual changes and increased hair growth. Hormonal treatments can sometimes help overcome these effects. In fact, hormone rebalance has been so successful that many doctors prescribe birth control pills to women experiencing uncontrollable acne.

During severe outbreaks, it can be beneficial, as mentioned above, to visit a spa. They will typically offer a variety of treatments that can be very successful at reducing the effects of acne. An acne facial, for instance, can quickly clean away the debris that is clogging your pores, as well as wash away dead skin cells and excess oil that could cause further problems. Keep in mind that acne peels remove the cells that tanning agents cling to, so you should avoid scheduling spray tanning appointments immediately after one of these treatments.

If your acne problems have resulted in severe scarring, then these spas can also offer Botox specials specials or dermal fillers to temporarily alleviate the visual effects of this.

Choosing a Medspa: What you Need to Know

Improving the look and feel of your skin could be easier than you think. An afternoon spent at a medspa could give you the results you want without the expense or downtime of cosmetic surgery. There are many less invasive procedures available today that can have you looking younger and feeling more confident. And you can still be home in time for supper, too. A local medspa might offer the treatments you need, like Botox or microdermabrasion, in an atmosphere you will enjoy.

If you are looking for a facility that offers chemical peels or Botox in Georgetown TX, there are a few things you should look for and a few questions you should ask. Finding a quality medspa that you can trust is important. You shouldn’t trust you body’s largest organ — the skin –to just anyone.

Most medspas are operated under the guidance and attention of at least one medical doctor. Sometimes you may even find a team of doctors and therapists joining together with a medspa. Check out the physician in charge of the medspa you’d like to use before you make your appointment. Find out how involved he is in the daily schedule. Some doctors do little more that lend their names and are rarely, if ever, on site. Don’t be afraid to check on the doctor’s credentials. State regulations vary so make sure your spa has all the necessary accreditations and licenses.

Some treatments may not require the direction supervision of a physician but you should know who is performing your service. Call and ask about the particular treatment that interests you and find out who will be responsible for it. Look for a spa that employs licensed therapists, nurse practitioners, and estheticians. Experience matters when performing these treatments. Ask how long the spa has been in business and how long your service provider has been working in the field.

You will also need to ask about the treatments they offer. If you are looking for microdermabrasion in Georgetown, you don’t want to make an appointment at a spa that specializes solely in chemical peels. See if the spa gives consultations so you can find out what services will work best for you.

Get as much information about your treatment as you can before you have your appointment. Ask lots of questions at your consultation. Make sure your expectations match the results that the procedure can be reasonably expected to give. Some treatments, like deep chemical peels, may take more than a day or two to heal. Others may take several treatments before the full effect can be seen in the skin. Some may have nearly immediate results, like Botox. You need to have reasonable goals for your services so be sure that you are well informed.

Finding a quality medspa takes a little more effort than just getting prices. Your skin is a sensitive and amazing organ and it needs to be treated with delicacy. You should base your choice on more than just the price. Choosing a good spa can result in a fresher, firmer and more rested looking appearance so be sure that you choose wisely.

Is Teeth Bleaching Safe?

Look at most celebrities and you’ll see that they have very white teeth. While many times the whiteness of their teeth is enhanced using a program like Photoshop, their teeth are actually often much whiter than the teeth of the average person. Why is that? How can a celebrity have teeth that are so much whiter than yours? Is it because they brush and floss more? The reason why celebrities have teeth that are so much whiter than yours is not because they take better care of their teeth or visit their dental expert more often, but is because they have had their teeth professionally-whitened using teeth bleaching.

What Is Teeth Bleaching?

We all know that if you want to get your laundry whites even whiter, the first thing that you should do is to add some bleach into the washing machine. But anyone who has ever tried this also knows how easy it is to ruin something that you’re wearing because of the bleach. Bleach is a very powerful chemical, and the idea of putting bleach on your teeth can, for some, be extremely nerve-wracking. But having your dentist do a teeth bleaching is extremely safe, which is not necessarily true of the at-home bleaching methods.

If you look at the ingredients that come in the at-home bleaching kits the first thing you’ll see is, of course, bleach. If you’re not trained in handling these products and kits correctly, you may actually do damage to your teeth and even to your gums. A bad bleaching can actually strip away the enamel of your teeth, leaving your teeth unprotected. That’s why so many people decide to look to their Austin dentist to help them get the whiter teeth that they’ve been dreaming of having.

Professional Teeth Whitening

A professional teeth whitening job, done by a mercury free dentist is actually something that takes very little time. After the initial visit, where the dentist will discuss your options and will figure out how many treatments will be necessary in order to get the whiter teeth that you’ve been hoping for, you will only have to visit the dentist in order to have the treatment done. The treatment takes about an hour, from start to finish, and can even be done during your lunch break, which is something that is very appealing to many. It requires simply sitting in a chair and having a special mouth piece put in your mouth. A special light works to whiten your teeth, along with the gel that the technician will professionally apply, and sooner than you know you’ll have teeth that are whiter than you ever imagined they could be.

A bleaching can be extremely safe, but most dentists recommend that rather than doing it yourself in your own home, you get the procedure done professionally by someone who has been expertly-trained and who knows how to handle the dangerous chemical.

The Texas State Capitol

The nation’s largest state capitol is right here in Austin, Texas. The capitol building also stands fourteen and a half feet taller than the Capitol building in Washington DC. The Texas state capitol is an amazing piece of architectural history and has a story to tell that’s all its own.

The capitol is situated on one of the highest points in Austin and was completed in 1888. The style is Renaissance Revival that is based on 15th century Italian architecture. The foundation of the building is limestone, while the exterior is “sunset red” granite. The construction of the building was not paid for in dollars, but in three million acres of land in the Texas Panhandle. The land later became the XIT Ranch.

Renovation and expansions have helped to improve the capitol over the last twenty years. In 1993, expansion was completed that doubled the available square footage and improved the functionality of the building. In 1995, a complete renovation of the exterior and interior were completed. The final upgrade was in 1997, with the restoration of the grounds that surround the building.

The state capitol offers a unique glimpse into the story of Texas. Not only does it appeal to those interested in architecture and history, but it is also the heart of the government. Special events and exhibits are often on display. Upcoming events include blood drives, performances by numerous high school choirs and bands, and meetings of different political groups.

Another interesting aspect of the capitol to be sure to see are the monuments spread out over the 22 acres of ground surrounding the capitol building. There are monuments to the wars fought by our country: World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Monuments specific to the history of Texas include a monument to the heroes of the Alamo, Texas pioneer women, and the Texas Cowboy.

The Visitors Center for the capitol building also offers numerous special exhibits. Past exhibits include capitol treasures, maps, and the treaty of Velasco. Currently the Visitors Center is showcasing the history of the Texas Governor’s mansion. Numerous aspects of the design and creation of the building will be highlighted. Tours of the grounds and capitol are available upon request. A guided tour will highlight a vast array of characteristics of the building themselves, Texas history, and the Texas legislature. Tours usually last approximately 45 minutes and are very informative.

Shopping and dining are also available at the capitol building. The gift shop stocks lots of made in Texas items as well as Texas souvenirs. The Capitol Grill is open to the public and a separate dining area can be reserved for catering. With the inclusion of the shopping and dining options, an entire day could be spent discovering all that the capitol and its surrounding grounds have to offer. Whether you are interested in the history of Texas, the amazing architecture of the capitol, the wonderful monuments spread out along the lawn, or the ever changing events, the State capitol has something for everyone.
